Mode of Attendance: Part time
Part of the Foundation Year

Description

The module in Classical Arabic at ASI is designed to prepare students with no previous knowledge of Arabic to read and understand Quranic and classical Islamic texts. In addition, students will learn both written and spoken Modern Standard Arabic, which will be enhanced through our flagship Sacred Sciences Journey.

Students who successfully complete all three terms will be awarded certificate in Classical Arabic. Students who enroll on to the auxiliary Sacred Sciences Journey (Saudi Arabia, April 2015) and complete the Spoken Arabic module will be awarded a further Certificate in Communicative Arabic. Successful completion means that the student has followed and completed all assignments satisfactorily and passed the end-of-term oral and written exams.

Module one: Classical Arabic and Grammar

  • Level 1
    • Unit 1: Quranic Vocabulary
    • Unit 2: Applied Arabic
  • Level 2
    • Unit 1: Quranic Vocabulary
    • Unit 2: Applied Arabic
  • Level 3
    • Unit 1: Quranic Vocabulary
    • Unit 2: Applied Arabic
    • Unit 3 Arabic Grammar & Morphology

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Read and understand Quranic and classical Arabic texts to a good degree.
  • Communicate effectively in Arabic in a wide range of situations.
  • Have a good understanding of Arabic grammar and morphology, and be able to read without tashkil (vowels) and write Arabic with ease.
  • Have a good command of the language to begin to translate the Quran and other classical Islamic literature.
  • The Auxiliary Arabic-Speaking module in an Arab country will help students to develop proficiency in speaking and listening skills and expose them to the various Arabic dialects.

The Applied Arabic lessons will be taught primarily in Arabic from Term 1. This approach will expose the students to the Arabic language from the first lesson and will aid the natural learning process of the language. This immersion approach to the language is the one used to teach non-Arabic speakers in institutions in the Arab world, and is a very successful method.

This course will develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and grammar in a balanced way. However, students may join the course at different levels based on assessment of their levels.

It is recommended that students study both the Classical Arabic and the Classical Islamic Sciences module in one year as it will complete year one (Foundation Level) of ASI’s five-year Degree in Islamic Scholarship (‘alimiyyah) programme.

Online and Distant Learning

Recorded Access

This course is also available online through our Virtual Madrasah with full study materials and audio and video recordings of all lectures. Students will have the flexibility to study at their own speed and conveniences; and fit study around work and lifestyle commitments.

Online Live

ASI has developed a high-quality online learning experience for those who live in areas that are too remote for travelling to London for the classes. The live online classes can be accessed from anywhere in the world and they are fully interactive; students can fully participate in the class discussion.

All classes will be live-streamed for registered students. These classes will be recorded and then uploaded for the access of the students during term time. Exam students will be given extended access to such recordings so that they can adequately prepare for their exams.

Please Note: ASI emphasises that online learning is only one of necessity; hence, anyone able to attend the classes in person is advised in the strongest terms to do so.
