Foundation Level [One Year] 2014/2015

Overview

The Foundation level of the Degree in Islamic Scholarship (‘alimiyyah) is structured to guide a beginner through part-time study with some of the best teachers in the UK, including Shaykh Akram Nadwi, until they become an accomplished scholar. It primarily consists of two modules, one focusing on Classical Arabic and the other on the Islamic Sciences. Students in this course will cover Arabic language, Islamic law, spirituality, Quranic studies, and hadith studies. Students who successfully complete all the modules of the Foundation level will be awarded a Certificate in Classical Arabic and Islamic Sciences

  • 90 hours/year of applied Arabic, grammar and morphology
  • Composed of three levels taught over three terms of ten weeks
  • Every Sunday from 10am to 1pm

Islamic Sciences Module

  • 120 hours of lectures 
  • Composed of six units taught over three terms of ten weeks
  • Every Sunday from 2pm to 6pm

Requirements

To be eligible to enroll for this programme, students should have:

  • Some beginner’s knowledge of Arabic: the alphabet, pronunciation and writing.
  • Able to read the Quran to a basic level (tajwid or good fluency is not essential)

If you feel you do not fulfill these requirements, then you will need to contact us for an interview. You may need to enroll on a separate programme, Introduction to Basic Islamic Sciences, which is currently not advertised.

Assessments

Students are assessed through a combination essays (30%) andwritten and oral end-of-year examinations (70%).
